And keep the charge of the LORD thy God, to walk
in his ways, to keep his statutes, and his commandments, and his
judgments, and his testimonies, as it is written in the law of
Moses, that thou mayest prosper in all that thou doest, and
whithersoever thou turnest thyself:
I Kings 2.3
The First Covenant
The Prime Number 613 is the Jewish Number par excellance. It is the Number that the Jews themselves
recongize as characteristic of their faith, since it is the Number of Commandments
in the Torah (cf. the
Aish Hatorah list
or the Jew Faq list or
for a list of all 613).
This is an ancient tradition that goes back to at least the 2nd Century AD
and is common knowledge amongst all Jews to this day
(cf. www.613.org).
The assertion that there are exactly 613 Commandments In the Torah is actually a
mathematical identity, fully satisfying to the most discerning of intellects:
In the Torah
B'Torah |
= 613 |
This identity is amplified in the value of the common title of Moses the Lawgiver:
Moses our Rabbi
Moshe Rabbeinu |
= 613 |
The meaning of the Number 613 finds its ultimate meaning in the Jewish Tradition in the title
of the ultimate Author of the Torah - note this title specifically refers to the God of Israel:
The Lord God of Israel
YHVH Elohi Yisroel |
= 613 |
Now the great miracle of God is that He designed the Greek language to integrate with the
meaning revealed in Hebrew, and to bear witness to the Truth of the Gospel to the Jews in
a way that no one could ever deny. The New Testament often refers to the Jews as the Circumsicion
because this was the sign of the First Covenant. We read (Romans 2.25f):
For circumcision verily profiteth, if thou keep the law:
but if thou be a breaker of the law, thy circumcision is made uncircumcision.
Therefore if the uncircumcision keep the righteousness of the law, shall not his
uncircumcision be counted for circumcision?
And shall not uncircumcision which is by nature, if it fulfil the law, judge thee, who
by the letter and circumcision dost transgress the law? For he
is not a Jew, which is one outwardly; neither is that circumcision,
which is outward in the flesh: But he is a Jew, which is one inwardly; and
circumcision is that of the heart, in the spirit, and not in the letter; whose
praise is not of men, but of God.
The exact word written is:
Circumcision
Peritome |
= 613 |
It is extremely important to meditate upon the implication of these identities. All Jews know that if
any number marks the Jews, it is the Number 613! To then find this is the numerical value of the
Greek word for circumcision can be seen as nothing less than the Work of the LORD GOD
OF ISRAEL! Oh Israel! Return to thy Lord!
Yet there is more! The Hebrew letters are used to indicate the order of things, such as first and second Samuel
which are written as Samuel A and Samuel B in the Hebrew Tanakh. Thus, the First Covenant - which is Cicumcision -
would be written as:
The First Covenant
B'rit Aleph |
= 613 = Circumcision |
The Light of the Law
Scripture declares that the Torah is Light. The New Testament makes this clear, revealing how the Light
of the Law reveals our Sin. Indde, the Law is Holy, and Just and Good. The first
occurrence of the Number 613 in the text of Scripture is found very early in Genesis, when God
saw the Light, that it was good:
And God saw the light, that it was good: and God divided the
light from the darkness.
We have the identity:
The Light
Et HaAur |
= 613 |
This is the essential light - indicated by the Aleph Tav. The same idea is expressed in
the opening verse of Psalm 27 (note 27 and 207 are the ordinal and standard values of Aur):
The LORD is my light and my salvation; whom shall I fear? the LORD
is the strength of my life; of whom shall I be afraid?
We have the identity:
My Light and My Salvation
