And Elijah the Tishbite, who was of the inhabitants of Gilead, said
unto Ahab, As the LORD God of Israel liveth, before whom I stand, there shall not be dew nor
rain these years, but according to my word.
I Kings 17.1
And it came to pass, as they still went on, and talked, that, behold, there appeared a
chariot of fire, and horses of fire, and parted them both asunder; and Elijah went up by a whirlwind
into heaven. And Elisha saw it, and he cried, My father, my father, the chariot of Israel,
and the horsemen thereof. And he saw him no more: and he took hold of his own clothes, and rent them
in two pieces.
II Kings 2.11f
The coming of Elijah at the End of Days (cf. 1661)is encoded in his name
Tishbite which means "one who returns." He is the herald of the return of the Lord, as it is
written in Malachi 4.4
Behold, I will send you Elijah the prophet before the coming of the great and
dreadful day of the LORD: And he shall turn the heart of the fathers to the
children, and the heart of the children to their fathers, lest I come and smite the earth with a curse.
His first appearance in I Kings on Spoke 11 integrates with
the Inner Cycle of Matthew, where he first appears
by name in Matthew 11.
