John 2 Exodus
And the Jews' passover was at hand, and Jesus went up to Jerusalem,
And found in the temple those that sold oxen and sheep and doves, and the changers
of money sitting: And when he had made a scourge of small cords, he drove them
all out of the temple, and the sheep, and the oxen; and poured out the changers' money,
and overthrew the tables; And said unto them that sold doves, Take these things hence;
make not my Father's house an house of merchandise.
And his disciples remembered that it was written, The zeal of thine house hath eaten
me up.
John Chapter 2
Bet, Exodus, and the House of God
The name of the Second Letter Bet denotes a House. God used it thoughout Scripture as a primary
structural marker. In John's Gospel, it debuts here in the second chapter just as it does in
Isaiah 2 and Matthew 2. But it is not merely a debut - the idea of the House of God
establishes two primary themes of John 2. The first is seen in the passage above, and is known
as the "cleansing of the temple." This integrates with
the great theme of the last fifteen chapters of Exodus wherein God delivered the detailed design
for His Tabernacle (cf. The Structure of Exodus).
The same phenomenon is seen in John 10 in the theme the Hand (cf.
My Father's Hand). Consider what this means: In John 2
Jesus first speaks of His Father's
House (Bet) and in John 10 he first speaks of His Fathers Hand (Yod). The integration with
the Hebrew alphabet is perfect.
Passover
And the Jews' passover was at hand ... [John 2]
John 2 contains the first occurrence of the word "Passover" in John 2 integrates perfectly with
the debut of the Passover in the Bible in Book 2, Exodus. This is a primary Spoke 2 theme of
redemption through Christ (God the Son) that also forms a
KeyLink between Exodus and I Corinthians (cf. Christ our
Passover).
Destroy this Temple
Then answered the Jews and said unto him, What sign shewest thou unto us, seeing that thou doest these
things? Jesus answered and said unto them, Destroy this temple, and in three days I will
raise it up. Then said the Jews, Forty and six years was this temple in building, and
wilt thou rear it up in three days? But he spake of the temple of his body. When therefore he
was risen from the dead, his disciples remembered that he had said this unto them; and
they believed the scripture, and the word which Jesus had said. [John 2]
This reiterates the theme of the Temple of God - only now bringing it to an entirely new level where it
is recognized as a mere symbol of the ultimate purpose of all creation when God transforms us into living
stones in His everlasting Temple. This is the ultimate meaning of Bet as God's House, His dwelling place, which
also relates to the Word through the identity:
The Word
Ho Logos |
|
= 443 = |
The House of God
Bet El |
|
This is the basis of the Logos Holograph indexed by the value of the name of the Letter Bet = n412
(Hebrews 4.12). This then links to the statement that "they believed the scripture, and the
word which Jesus had said" which seems to equate Jesus' Word with Scritpure, which makes good sense to me.
