Do you think the absence of the Ark in the rebuilt post exilic Temple was on purpose (by God) or was it absent by human error. Why was it missing?
Second Maccabees says that Jeremiah hid it in a cave on Mt. Nebo before the Temple of Solomon was destroyed - as I recall. It was never found in the days before the Temple of Herod was destroyed in 70AD. It has been rumored to be in several places, but without substance. Do you think it will ever reappear in history? For what purpose?

Jer 3:14 Turn, O backsliding children, saith the LORD; for I am married unto you: and I will take you one of a city, and two of a family, and I will bring you to Zion:
Jer 3:15 And I will give you pastors according to mine heart, which shall feed you with knowledge and understanding.
Jer 3:16 And it shall come to pass, when ye be multiplied and increased in the land, in those days, saith the LORD, they shall say no more, The ark of the covenant of the LORD: neither shall it come to mind: neither shall they remember it; neither shall they visit [it]; neither shall [that] be done any more.
Jer 3:17 At that time they shall call Jerusalem the throne of the LORD; and all the nations shall be gathered unto it, to the name of the LORD, to Jerusalem: neither shall they walk any more after the imagination of their evil heart.
Jer 3:18 In those days the house of Judah shall walk with the house of Israel, and they shall come together out of the land of the north to the land that I have given for an inheritance unto your fathers.
Jer 3:19 ¶ But I said, How shall I put thee among the children, and give thee a pleasant land, a goodly heritage of the hosts of nations? and I said, Thou shalt call me, My father; and shalt not turn away from me.
Jer 3:20 Surely [as] a wife treacherously departeth from her husband, so have ye dealt treacherously with me, O house of Israel, saith the LORD.
The Ark of The Covenant went into Babylon (pun)..... and never came out of 'Her'. It was most likely destroyed there. Jer. 3:16 says that under the New Covenant that the Ark of The Covenant would not be visited or 'remembered' (as in we do not 'remember' -follow- the old Covenant). Wisdom would dictate that 'The House of Israel' (Samaria) and The House of Juduah (Jerusalem) have never come back together... (ver 18) to form the 'Tabernacle of David' ie. all twelve (thirteen) Tribes. This did not happen when 'Juduah' returned from Babylon and it did not happen in 1948 (1917 ...Belfar declaration). So are you waiting for 'The Ark of The Covenant' to some how 'materialize' and then vanish again for 'The House of Israel and The House of Judauh' to 'remember and visit' it no more?

Hey - that was a very good answer. I wasn't aware of that passage in Jeremiah. It makes a lot of sense in reference to the New Covenant - thank you Sir.
No, what I was getting around to is that the disappearance of the Ark from the Temple Of Herod, I think, was planned by God for a specific purpose - it was not a mistake or error on anyone's part. The Ark of the Covenant has been lost to history because it was in God's plan to shift the symbology in the Temple from himself - to His Son who was coming for his first advent in the times after the rebuilding of the Temple in Zechariah's day (520BC). It's not a mistake or failure that the Ark was not present in the rebuilt Temples of Zerubabel and Herod. God's plan is perfect.
The Jews saw the nation of Israel as being located in the exact center of the earth. They saw Jerusalem as being in the center of Israel, they saw the Temple as being in the center of Jerusalem, they saw the Holy of Holies as being the center of the Temple and finally the most important thing - they saw the Shetiyah (foundation stone) the base or stone upon which the Ark had been sitting on originally as the foundation stone of the whole earth. We know this stone as "The Cornerstone" from scripture because it was believed to be the "corner stone" "cap Stone" or "foundation stone" of the whole earth. Of course you can already see Jesus in this symbolism - I don't need to explain it. Our definition of cornerstone is different in our time and culture.
If you run a search on "Shetyiah" you will find the whole legend of this stone in Jewish history. It appears first in the creation story and moves past the time of David. It was the stone on which the blood was sprinkled on the day of Atonement in place of the Ark of the Covenant.
God made may types, shadows, and symbols of things of reality and placed them there for us to find. The near sacrifice of Isaac was really a shadow of the Cross. What was this cap stone a picture of? I cant help but to think of the stone stained with Jesus blood in the tomb with two angels sitting on either end. Was this the reality of the symbolic Stone on which the Ark Sat - I wonder.
