In 1 Tess 5:23 we have body, soul and spirit mentioned in one verse; And the very God of peace sanctify you wholly; and I pray God your whole spirit and soul and body be preserved blameless unto the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ. Is the verse reliable or do we have any error crept in?
Jesus said (Matt 10:28); And fear not them which kill the body, but are not able to kill the soul: but rather fear him which is able to destroy both soul and body in hell.
In the last dying minutes of Jesus on the cross (tree) he said (Luke 23:46); Father, into thy hands I commend my spirit:
Jesus also said (Matt 22:37); Thou shalt love the Lord thy God with all thy heart, and with all thy soul, and with all thy mind.
In this last quote, heart, soul and mind are all mentioned.
Here is another verse in which we have a different combination: (Heb 4:12)For the word of God is quick, and powerful, and sharper than any twoedged sword, piercing even to the dividing asunder of soul and spirit, and of the joints and marrow, and is a discerner of the thoughts and intents of the heart.
The perfect man will have a pure heart and will as spoken by Jesus (Matt 5:8) Blessed are the pure in heart: for they shall see God. , but as with most men (including women) this is what Jeremiah has to say (Jer 17:9); The heart is deceitful above all things, and desperately wicked:
This is for completion. I have only found one verse in which body and heart are both mentioned (Dan 5:21); And he (Nebucadnezzar) was driven from the sons of men; and his heart was made like the beasts, and his dwelling was with the wild asses: they fed him with grass like oxen, and his body was wet with the dew of heaven; till he knew that the most high God ruled in the kingdom of men, and that he appointeth over it whomsoever he will.
So what do all the terms mean and how are they all connected with one another?
We do not have to get into a debate about this. Let us say in this thread there is no right or wrong answer. Just define what you think each means to see if we can reach a consensus. We can argue the differences in another thread.
