WE CANNOT BE absolutely how Sumerian and Akkadian were spoken; but many useful guidelines are available to the student, including the transliterated tablets found all over Mesopotamia. Basically, we can offer the following principles which should prove of value in reciting the foreign language instructions :
Vowels.
a as in "father" e as in "whey" i as in "antique" o as in "boat" (but rarely found) u as in "zulu."
Consonants.
Most are basically the same as in English. The Sumerians did not have an alphabet as we know it, but they had developed a syllabary, very much like the Japanese "Kana" script of today. In phonetic transliterations, the English spelling sought to approximate the Sumerian pronunciation. However, there are a few sounds which English does not possess, and which have been put into phonetic variations. Important examples below : X as in the German "ach" CH (same as above) Q as in "like" K (same as above) SH as in "shall" SS as in, perhaps, "lasso"; a hissing "s" common to Arabic languages Z as in "lots"; a hard "ts" sound, not quite as in "zoo" Remember, in the transliterations which follow, every letter must be pronounced. There are no schwas or silent syllables in Sumerian. Hence, "KIA" is pronounced "Keeya"; "KA-I-MA-NU" is pronounced "ka-ee-mah-nu" or, if spoken rapidly, the two initial vowel sounds slur into 'kigh' rhyming with "high."

"THE ANGELS"
Zoroastrianism contains the earliest distillation of prehistoric belief in angels, the Amesha-Spenta
As a complex the Amesha Spentas constitute a holy 7-heptad made up of God's (Ahura Mazda, Lord of Truth and Wisdom) most potent qualities. Simultaneously, they individually inhabit immortal bodies, that operate in the physical (Elememntal) world, to protect guide and inspire humanity, and the spirit world. The formless aspect of the Amesha Spentas dual-functionality, might more easily be compared with Christianity's Holy Trinity or celestial Thrones but this in no way disqualifies them from being both divine hosts and archangelic Archetypes.

The four types that became gods of the four quarters and four elements are portrayed:
1. Uati (Goddess of the North, Isis)
2. Seb (or Sut)
3. Shu
4. Ra
1. Uati (Leo) represents Water
2. Seb (Aquarius) Earth
3. Shu or (Scorpio), Air
4. Ra (Taurus), Fire
In a still later phase the four became four-rams or souls of Ra called Sheft-Kat, "the primordial force."
The name of Uati, "Goddess of the North", to be, to exist, essential being, support, body, be embodied, impersonated; sanctuary, abode of being; person, essential self; to make a sign of covenant between God and Man, or between the heavens and earth, a memorial sign of time in the division of day from night. The legend tells the same story as various others relating to the founding of the four corners.
In Egypt the four-divinities or genii of the four-quarters or corners were originally One-Unit Female and three (a triad) males, as Uati, Seb, Shu, and Ra (or Horus).
Two is the Word or Logos. A∴ is the Active; B∴ is the Passive. Unity is Boaz, and the Binary is Jachin.
Now the earliest known four quarters were marked according to this beginning:
1. Regulus in the constellation Leo-Lammas (Element-Water) answering to Sothis-Isis or Sirius as one of the first four corner stars.
2. Antares in Scorpio (Element-Air).
3. Fomalhaut in Pisces Australis for Aquarius (Element-Earth).
4. Aldebaran in Taurus (Elements- Fire).

Angel(s), [from Greek angelos messenger, envoy, announcer]. In the Old Testament, used to translate the Hebrew mal’ach (messenger); in Christian, Jewish, Moslem, and some other theologies, either a messenger of God or one of various hierarchies of celestial beings, the idea of a guardian angel also being familiar. However, the idea of hosts of formative powers, rectores mundi, or other beings between divinity and man, serving as intermediaries or means of communication between man and high spiritual entities has largely vanished from popular Christianity, though Angels, Principalities, and Powers are mentioned by Paul, and the archangel Michael by Jude; while the influence of the Gnostics, Neoplatonists, and Jews on early Christianity gives a wider meaning to the term.
Angels, then, are members of numerous hierarchies of celestial powers, from the septenary formative host that emanates from the formative Third Logos down to the presiding genius or spirit of an atom, acting as intermediaries or envoys between the divine and the human or terrestrial.
Angel of Death. Also SAMAEL.
Angelology.
A hierarchical system of angels, messengers, celestial powers or emanations, especially those of the Jews and Christians. The Jewish system is Qabbalistic-like; the Christian system, chiefly due to the Celestial-Hierarchy and to the Ecclesiastical-Hierarchy of Dionysius the pseudo-Aeropagite, was adopted from about the 5th or 6th centuries and had an immense influence on later Christian theology. It was divided into a nine or ten-fold plan after the manner of Pythagoras and the Neo-platonists, the summit of this Christian hierarchy being the divine, God.
The Hierarchy includes:
1) Expanse of the Divine Presence
2) Seraphim
3) Cherubim
4) Thrones
5) Dominations or Dominions
6) Virtues
7) Powers
8) Principalities
9) Archangels
10) Angels.

ALCHEMY
The attainment of union of his mental with his spiritual faculties. The culmination of the "Great Work" is the alchemical-union of the three-elements:
Sulphur - Soul (Sun)
Mercury - Spirit (Moon)
Salt - Body (Earth)
The three principles, the Salt, Sulfur, and Mercury, are merely different as modes of being of the same thing, and the many names arising out of the action and passion of these, do but indicate the stages of progress and development, as of a tree, which with its leaves, trunk, flowers, buds, fruit and branches, all differing, is nevertheless one individual, of one original, and of one root!
There are three-principles in this Force, Attraction (Coagulation), Circulation, Repulsion (Dissolution) - the Alchemical Salt, Mercury, Sulphur. What is really changed is the magnetic attraction; the medial-pirit is changed; "life is attracted in", instead of out. We must remember that Alchemy is Divine-Chemistry, and "the transmutation of Life"; and therefore that which is the medium between soul and body is changed, and the soul freed from the chains of corporeity, and the body is left as a mere husk. These people put on their bodies as mere coats.
The Sulphur, the Salt and the Mercury; the water, the air, the fire, etc., "relates to principles" rather than qualities: "in the spirit" they become qualities. Thought qualitates spirit, and spiritual experiences bring the qualities produced into manifestation, into esse from posse. The Universal or God's Will being "represented as agent dissolves the false forms in the self-will" represented as patient. The great Salt Sea (Wisdom, the Universal Will) dissipates the impure sulphurs (desires, phantasms of ego-self) in the individual will as the strokes of the sun's grace rays dissipate the darkness of night.

THE FOUR OF THE MAIN ARCHANGELS, EGYPTIAN GODDESSES, ELEMENTS AND PLANETARY:
FOUR ASSOCIATED CARDINALS, CORNERS, WATCHTOWERS AND CROSS-QUARTER DAYS-
(1) Gabriel - North - Nephthys - Water (Saturn) Candlemas
(2) Michael - South - Isis - Fire (Jupiter) Lammas

They are traditionally in lore invoked as guarding the elemental demon-circle and four "watchtowers," "corners," "pillars," "quarters," or directions, and their corresponding colors are associated with "sympathetic-magical" properties.
In general, their (Archangels) task is to inspire and guard large groups or collective of human beings, such as whole nations, body-politic, peoples or ethnic groups.
Angels who deal with individuals (the so-called guardian angels) or smaller soul groups.
THE TRADITIONAL SEVEN ARCHANGELS WITH NAMES GIVEN BY ESOTERIC CHRISTIANITY ARE:
(1) Gabriel (Moon)
(2) Raphael (Mercury)
(3) Michael (Sun)
(4) Anael (Venus)
(5) Samael (Mars)
(6) Zachariel (Jupiter)

In Christianity, the dove is a symbol of the Holy Ghost, who appears in that form to Jesus at his baptism. It is also often one of the four sacred animals which denote four important human principles along with the bull, the eagle, and the lion.
These four animals in Greek mystic mythology are symbols respectively of the planets:
1. Venus = Dove
2. Moon = Bull
3. Mercury (or Jupiter) = Eagle
4. Sun = Lion
but it is more properly here a seraph or cherub, the fiery-winged serpent or Agathodaimon. As a symbol of gentleness and love it is frequent in the Hebrew scriptures.
Venus = Human = Copper
Mars = Lion = Silver
Sun = Eagle = Gold
Jupiter = Calf = Iron
Rev. 4:7. 'And the first beast was like a lion, and the second beast like a calf, and the third beast had a face as a man, and the fourth beast was like a flying eagle.'
The beast with four faces, seen in Ezekiel's vision, where the circle is described as a wheel with four faces of the beast which had the likeness of a man, a lion, an ox, and an eagle; also of the four in Revelation where they appear as the lion, calf, man, and bird (scorpio)- the lion (leo), bull, (taurus) and waterman (aquarius) of the zodiac.
These four characters and four elements were likewise represented by four elementary spirits, or genii, who were stationed at the four corners.

It is said that Tishtar is the chieftain of the east, Sataves the chieftain of the west, Vanand the chieftain of the south, and Hapto-ringa the chieftain of the north.' Hapto-ringa is the constellation of Ursa Major or the seven Bears.
Tishtar is identified with Sirius, the other two are less certain, but most probably Antares in Scorpio and Fomalhaut in Pisces Australis are intended. Also the four are certain to be the gods of the four quarters who are found in so many mythologies. In the Avesta these watchers in the four quarters of the heavens are called Tistrya in the east; Satavaesa in the west; Vanand in the south, and Hapto-ringa (the seven Bears) in the north.
Furthermore, the Bundahish, says, 'Seven chieftains of the planets have come in to the Seven chieftains of the constellations:
Mercury (Tir) unto Tishtar
Venus (Anahid) unto Sataves
Mars unto Haptok-ring (the seven Bears, the female companions of Tishtar)
Jupiter (Ahura-Mazda) unto Vanand
Saturn unto the great (one) of the middle of the sky, Gokihar
Sun and Moon (and Stars) unto the thievish Muspar (or Mus-parika), provided with tails.

The ancient Syrians defined their world of Rulers similarly to the Chaldeans:
1. the lowest world was the sublunary, our earth, ruled by Angels
2. then Mercury, Archangels
3. Venus, Principalities
4. Sun, Powers
5. Mars, Virtues
6. Jupiter, Dominions
7. and Saturn, Thrones.
The fifth order of Binah gates is termed The Angelic World and its divisions are as follows:
(41) Ishim-- Sons of Fire
(42) Orphanim-- Cheribum
(43) Aralim-- Thrones
(44) Chashmalim-- Dominions
(45) Seraphim-- Virtues
(46) Melachim-- Powers
(47) Elohim-- Principalities
(48) Ben Elohim- Angels
(49) Cherubim-- Archangels
[The order of the Angels is a matter of controversy, the arrangement above differing from that accepted in other sections of this volume. The Rabbins disagree fundamentally as to the proper sequence of the Angelic names.]
The hierarchy includes:
1) Expanse of the Divine Presence
Upper Triad
2) Seraphim
3) Cherubim
4) Thrones
Middle Triad
5) Dominations or Dominions
6) Virtues
7) Powers
Lower Triad
8) Principalities
9) Archangels
10) Angels.

(5) Fa - Mars
(6) Sol - Jupiter
(7) La - Saturn
in making the music of the spheres.
The seven vowels, to take them as they are printed by Bunsen A E Ê I O Ô U, though not a perfect form, were all contained potentially in the A I U, which in Egyptian and Coptic resolve into Iu, Ei, or an I with the u inherent. Iu (or Yu) signifies to come and go, but it also denotes duality, to be twin or two. The Arabic and Syriac alif is likewise figured double. The hieroglyphic calf, which became the Phoenician and Hebrew aleph, the ox bull and steer, was a dual image, because a calf is of either sex. The Hebrew Yod י, or i, is a hand that has the numeral value of 10. The one vowel, therefore, whether represented by A, I, or U, was a diphthong that bifurcated and became sevenfold in the vowel sounds.
Visible light occupies slightly less than one octave of the electromagnetic spectrum, i.e. the longest wavelengths (c. 7600 ) of visible light are slightly less than twice the length of the shortest wavelengths (c. 4000); and, The musical note A below middle C is set by convention at a frequency of 440.0 Hz; and 440.0 terahertz (THz) is near the end of the red frequencies of visible light. (thanks to the late Issac Asimov for his discussion of the musical frequencies.)
Thus, the frequencies of light can be matched up in terahertz with musical notes in hertz. This can then be compared with the visible colors. As it happens, the most familiar colors of the visible spectrum- red, orange, yellow, green, blue, and violet- number 6, which is the number of white keys on a piano (all the natural notes, "G, A, B, C, D, E, F#") between G and G.
THE SEVEN KEYS OF THE G MAJOR CHORD:
(1) F - Red
(2) G - Orange
(3) A - Yellow
(4) B - Green
(5) C - Blue
(6) D - Indigo
(7) E - Violet
THE SEVEN COLORS OF THE VISIBLE SPECTRUM, THE ORBIT LINES OF THE PLANETS AND DAYS OF THE WEEK:

THE FULL PLANETARY SCHEME, AS GIVEN BY A BILINGUAL LIST IN THE BRITISH MUSEUM, WAS AS FOLLOWS:
AKU Sin the MOON SIN (MONDAY) 2ND DAY
BISEBI Å*amaÅ¡ the SUN SHAMMASH (SUNDAY, CHRISTIAN SABBATH OR RESURRECTION) 1ST DAY
DAPINU Umun-sig-êa JUPITER MERODACH (THURSDAY) 5TH DAY
ZIB (or ZIG) Dele-bat VENU ISHTAR (FRIDAY, ISLAMIC SABBATH) 6TH DAY
LU-LIM-lim Lu-bat-sag-uš SARTURN NIRIG (SATURDAY, ORIGINAL AND JEWISH SABBATH ) 7TH DAY
BIBBU Lubat-gud MERCURY NEBO (WEDNESDAY) 4TH DAY
SIMUTU Muštabarru MARS NERGALl (TUESDAY) 3RD DAY
JUPITER (NIBIRU) and SATURN.
Concerning Jupiter, who is in the above called Dapinu (Semitic), and Umun-sig-êa (Sumerian), it has already been noted that he was called Nibiru- Merodach as he who went about among the stars "pasturing" them like sheep, as stated in the Babylonian story of the Creation (or Bel and the Dragon). This is explained by him as being due to the comparatively rapid and extensive path of Jupiter on the ecliptic, and it would seem probable that the names of Saturn, /Kâawanu/ and /Sag-uš/ (the former, which is Semitic Babylonian, meaning "steadfast", or something similar, and the latter, in Sumerian, "head-firm" or "steadfast"-"phlegmatic"), to all appearance indicate in like manner the deliberation of his movements compared with those of the planet dedicated to the king of the gods.
AND IN THE VARIOUS MONTHS.
IÅ¡tar (Ishtar) was identified with:
Nin-si-anna in the first month of the year (Nisan = March-April)
With the star of the bow in Ab (August-September), etc.
In Sebat (January-February) she was the star of the water-channel, Ikû, which was Merodach's star in Sivan (May-June)
And in Marcheswan (Oct.-Nov.) her star was Rabbu, which also belonged to Merodach in the same month.
STARS INDENTIFIED WITH MERODACH (MARDUK).
The same fragment gives the celestial names of Merodach for every month of the year, from which it would appear, that the astrologers called him:
1. Umun-sig-êa in Nisan (March-April)
2. Dapinu in Tammuz (June-July)
3. Nibiru in Tisri (September-October)
Å*arru (the star Regulus), in Tebet (December-January), etc. (CHRISTMAS)
The first three are names by which the planet Jupiter (Nibiru) was known.
HOW THE GODS WERE REPRESENTED. ON THE CYLINDER SEALS.
The deity Merodach, driven in a chariot drawn bya winged LION, upon whose shoulders stands "A NAKED (WARRIOR) GODDESS", holding thunderbolts in each hand, described as Zer-panîtum.
Anaitis (Neith) or Anata was the Semitic goddess of a warlike character, somewhat approaching the Bellona of Classic mythology. She was "REPRESENTED AS A NAKED WARRIOR WOMAN" on a LION. A representation found at Pterion, in Asia Minor, shows a goddess supposed to be Anaitis, "standing naked on the back of a leopard-like animal" holding in her hand a crescent-crowned staff. She is accompanied by the unicorn, and has an attendant who stands on the back of a dog. Here the unicorn typifies the primordial genetrix or Goddess, and the dog, her son.
The Egyptian Goddess Ken, "REPRESENTED STANDING NAKED ON A LION," held two serpents in her hand. She is the same as the Nin-Astarte or Ashtaroth (Ishtar) of the Assyrians. Hera, worshipped in the Great Temple at Babylon, held in her right hand a serpent by the head; and near Khea, also worshipped there, were two large Silver Serpents. Venus or Ishtar (Astarte) was "THE GREAT FEMALE DIETY."
THE PLANETARY OR THE SEVEN PLANETS:
SATURN. The God of Saturn is NINIB called ADAR.
Saturn 30.
JUPITER. The God of Jupiter is the Lord of Magicians, MARDUK KURIOS (LORD) of the Double-headed Axe. Sphere of Jupiter, MERODACH (MARDUK).
MARS. The God of Mars is the mighty NERGAL. He has the head of a man on the body of a lion (SPHINX), and bears a sword and a flail. He is the God of War, and of the fortunes of War. He was sometimes though to be an agent of the Ancient Ones, for he dwelt in KUTHA for a time. His colour is dark red. His essence is to be found in Iron, and in all weapons made.
SUN. SHAMMASH is the Name of the Sun. It would read SAMAS or SAMMAS. The Sun 'Dies' in the West. (bis) Spirit
SHAMASH AG. "Shammash the Mighty!" SHAMMASH is also called called UDU. Sumerian BiÅ¡ebi. The sun-god had several other non-Semitic names, including /GiÅ¡nu/, "the light" (t is the group expressing this word which is used for Å*amaÅ¡ inthe name of Å*amaÅ¡-Å¡um-ukîn (Saosduchinos), the brother of AÅ¡Å¡ur-bani-âpli (Assurbanipal). The Greek equivalent implies the pronunciation /Å*awaÅ¡/, as well as /Å*amaÅ¡/.), /Ma-banda-anna/, "the bark of heaven," /U-ê/, "the rising sun," /Mitra/, apparently the Persian Mithra; /Ume-Å¡imaÅ¡/ and Nahunda, Elamite names, and Sahi, the Kassite name of the sun. He also sometimes bears the names of his attendants Kittu and Mêšaru, "Truth" and "Righteousness," who guided him upon his path as judge of the earth. At Sippar and Larsa (modern Iraq) the sun-god Å*amaÅ¡ was worshipped.
VENUS. Copper, Venus. Venus at Sunrise and Sunset. Venus as the morning and evening (or evening and morning) star. She was a female at sunset, and a male at Sunrise; Ištar of Agadé (Akad or Akkad) at sunrise, and Ištar of Erech at sunset: Ištar of the stars at sunrise, and the Lady of the Gods at sunset. Zib (This is apparently a Sumerian dialectic form, the original word having seemingly been Zig.) Sumerian Dele-bat and the Semitic Ištar. Sumerian dialect Gašan-anna. The Goddess of Venus is the most excellent Queen INANNA, called of the Babylonians ISHTAR. She is the Goddess of Passion, both of Love and of War, depending upon her sign and the time of her appearance in the heavens. She appears as a most beautiful Lady, in the company of lions, and partakes of a subtle astral nature with the Moon God NANNA. The Number of the Sumerian Goddess of Venus, hence of Love and War, is Fifteen. In many of the ancient tablets of that period, she is actually referred to as "the Fifteen," as a shortcut to spelling out the whole Name in cuneiform.
MERCURY. Mercury, NEBO. He is a very old spirit, having a long beard, and is the guardian of the Gods, as well as the keeper of the knowledge of Science. He wears a crown of one hundred horns, and the long robe of the Priest. His Essence is in that metal known as Quicksilver, and is sometimes also found in sand, and in those things bearing the sign of Mercury. Sumerian Bibbu and Lubat-gud.
MOON. As mentioned, the God of the Moon was called NANNA by the Sumerians. By the later Sumerians and Assyrians, he was called SIN. Sphere of the Moon NANNA. Moon, SIN. The cult of the moon-god was one of the most popular in Babylonia, the chief seat of his worship being at Uru (now Muqayyar) the Biblical Ur of the Chaldees. The origin of the name Sin is unknown, but it is thought that it may be a corruption of Zu-ena, "knowledge-lord," as the compound ideograph expressing his name may be read and translated. The moon is placed before the sun is that the sun, was regarded as his son. It was noteworthy also that the moon was accredited with two other offspring, namely, Mâšu and Mâštu- son and daughter respectively. As /mâšu/ means "twin," these names must symbolise the two halves, or, as we say, "quarters" of the moon, who were thus regarded, in Babylonian mythology, as his "twin children." Sumerian Aku. Aku, the moon-god among the heavenly bodies. It is this name which is regarded as occurring in the name of the Babylonian king Eri-Aku, "servant of the moon-god," the biblical Arioch (Gen. xiv.). The Hebrew Helal, the new moon.

The Directions
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Looking at the figure in Agrippa's De occulta philosophia we see an upright pentagram surrounded by two rings; between the rings and aligned with the angles between the pentagram's points are Greek letters reading clockwise: UGI?A. The mysterious fourth letter is not entirely clear, but its appearance is consistent with a common medieval abbreviation for EI or ei (which looks vaguely like a theta, but more like a dollar sign made without lifting the pen).
Vincenzo Cartari's (Venezia 1609, Padova 1626) shows a Pythagorean signet ring bearing an upright pentagram labeled with both Hugieia and Salus. The Greek letters UGEIA are clockwise in the points, beginning with the upper-left arm. The Roman letters SALUS are clockwise in the angles, beginning with the lower-left angle (Latin Salus has the same meaning as Hugieia).
So, although we can conclude that the Pythagoreans labeled the Pentagram with the letters U, G, I, EI, A, sometimes we find them clockwise, sometimes counterclockwise, and either placed on the points starting at the top (Alstedius, Kircher), or in the angles starting at the top right (Agrippa). Since the historical evidence for the placement is late and inconsistent, I have developed a Pythagorean Pentacle that embodies many important alchemical, magical and astrological relationships; indeed, it functions as a sort of alchemical computer. The pentagram is inscribed in a pentagon with the letters U, G, I, EI (or Th), A written clockwise on the points beginning in the lower left point:
I
G EI
U A
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
The Elements
The letters labeling the corners of the Pentacle are the first letters of Greek words for the Elements:
U: Hudor = Water
G: Gaia = Earth
I: Idea = Form/Idea, or Hieron = a divine, holy thing
EI: Heile = Sun's Warmth or Th: Therma = Heat
A: Aer = Air
Though the Theta may be explained as a joined Epsilon and Iota, we see here an alternative explanation, for either is an abbreviation for the Fiery Element. Notice how the pattern of the letters, UG/I/EIA or UG/I/ThA, matches the arch structure of the Pentacle; interestingly the Greek word Hugieia has a high-tone (acute) accent on the Iota (corresponding to Spirit), which seems appropriate.
This seems to be the only arrangement of the Elements on the Pentagram that generates UGIEIA or UGIThA (let alone both) from plausible Element names. Also I should note that the above Element names are the usual ones that appear, for example, in Aristotle, except Fire, where Pur is used; however Empedocles (who discovered the Four Elements) uses Eelios = Sun, which is described as Thermos, for Fire. Also, although Aristotle uses Aither for the Fifth Element (Quintessence), Plato clearly associates it with the World of Forms (Ideai). I think Hieron (a holy, divine thing) is also appropriate for the Quintessence (which resides in the Celestial Sphere).
To see what's going on more clearly, you might want to draw a Pentagram with a circumscribed Pentagon. It will be helpful later if you draw the Pentagram and Pentagon in contrasting colors. The lower trapezoid of the figure is then a (distorted) Square of Opposition representing the Four Mundane Elements Earth-Water-Air-Fire. Spirit stands above these, forming a pyramid over them.
First observe that the Pentacle embodies the Physical Order of the Elements; if we stay on the Mundane level we have Earth-Water-Air-Fire, and we can make it a cycle counterclockwise (as in the Alchemical Circulation) by returning from Fire to Earth across the horizontal beam of the Pentagram.
Likewise, the Pentacle includes the Extended Physical Order (the Metaphysical Order), which includes the ascent to Spirit: Earth-Water-Air-Fire-Spirit by a counter-clockwise (Left-Hand or Lunar-Widdershins) circuit. Of course we get the descent Spirit-Fire-Air-Water-Earth by going clockwise (Right-Hand or Solar-Deosil) .
You danced around the May-Pole Sunwise or Sunward. In Scottish folklore, considered the Deosil or "prosperous course", turning from east-to-west in the direction of the sun. It is perhaps no coincidence that, in the Northern Hemisphere, "sunwise" and "clockwise" run in the same direction. This is probably because of the use of the sun as a timekeeper on sundials etc., whose features were in turn transferred to clock faces themselves.
Another influence may also have been the "Right-Handed" bias in many human cultures. Neo-pagans and modern Wiccans use the idiosyncratic spelling Deosil- however, "this is not used in any of the three original Gaelic languages."
The opposite (as averse or inverted Pentagram) course was known in Scotland as Widdershins (Lowland-Scots), or tuathal (Scottish Gaelic, lit. northerly), and would have been counter-clockwise. The course (deosil) was deemed propitious, the contrary course (widdershins), tuathal, fatal, or at least, unpropitious- turning from west to east in the direction of the moon.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
The Organic Cycle
Aristotle showed that the properties of the Four Elements are caused by the Four Qualities or Powers, Wet, Hot, Dry and Cold. Thus Earth=Dry+Cold, Water=Cold+Wet, Air=Wet+Hot, Fire=Hot+Dry.
The Four Qualities comprise two Dualities: Hot/Cold (active) and Dry/Wet (passive), usually displayed in a Square of Opposition, thus:
Cold
Wet Dry
Hot
The Four Qualities fall into a Natural Order, which might be called the Organic Order: Wet, Hot, Dry, Cold (the preceding circle counterclockwise). I won't repeat the explanations (see Ptolemy's Tetrabiblos), but here are some of the correspondences:
Quality Age Season Moon
---------------------------------
Wet Child Spring 1st Q.
Hot Youth Summer 2nd Q.
Dry Maturity Autumn 3rd Q.
Cold Old Age Winter 4th Q.
Note that this makes the Cold/Wet transition of the Cycle a key Transition Point: (1) it represents the Dark of the Moon, (2) the traditional start of the year (Vernal Eq.), and (3) reincarnation (the passage from death back into birth). (See The Ancient Greek Esoteric Doctrine of the Elements for more on the qualities and their correspondences.)
Since the Qualities are shared by pairs of elements, they actually fall on the lines of the Pythagorean Pentacle. For example, Wet corresponds to the line connecting Water (U) and Air (A). If we look at the Pentacle as a Pyramid, the four lines around the base represent the Four Powers in their mundane manifestation. The four sides rising above them toward the apex (corresponding to Spirit) represent the elevation or aetherialization of the Powers (at the apex they all become identical; this is the alchemical Quintessence.
Although the Powers properly belong on the lines between the points, it is often convenient to place them on the points, thus identifying them with the Elements. Aristotle showed that one of the two Powers constituting an Element is dominant (the first of the two given in the equations above), so Earth is predominantly Dry, Water is Cold, Air is Wet and Fire is Hot. These correspondences may not be entirely obvious (and other philosophers, such as the Stoics, have done them differently), but overall they work best, especially for alchemy. When we apply them we get the following correspondences for the points of the Pentagram:
Letter Element Power Age Season Moon
-----------------------------------------------
A Air Wet Child Spring 1st Q.
EI Fire Hot Youth Summer 2nd Q.
G Earth Dry Maturity Autumn 3rd Q.
U Water Cold Old Age Winter 4th Q.
This is, in fact, the most common set of correspondences used through the Renaissance.
The Fifth Element can be included as follows:
I Spirit Divine Death Terror New Moon
Time
(The "Terror Time" refers to the unnamed and unnumbered days between the years.) One might expect I=Death to fall on the Pentacle between U=Oldage and A=Child, but it does not; perhaps this is because the ascent to Spirit can occur from any stage of life. There is a different analysis, based directly on the elements rather than the qualities, which does put Death in the expected place.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
The Tetractys
The Tetractys, the sequence I-II-III-IIII, which together add to the Decad, was another holy symbol of the Pythagoreans, usually written:
* I
* * or I I
* * * I I I
* * * * I I I I
The second-century Neoplatonist Theon (Math. Chrem. Platon. Anag. II.xxxviii) gives a set of correspondences to the Tetractys, based on the properties of the first four numbers. For example, they are correspond to the Elements in order of decreasing subtlety: 1=Fire, 2=Air, 3=Water, 4=Earth. This is also the order of the Mundane Spheres, from outside to inside (aetherial fire above the damp lower air, above the water, held by the earth).
The first four numbers also represent processes of growth or development. For example,
Num. Elem. Lifestage Season
--------------------------------
1 Fire Child Spring
2 Air Youth Summer
3 Water Maturity Autumn
4 Earth Old Age Winter
Here the emphasis is on Development (especially toward greater stability, gravity), whereas in the Organic Cycle it is on the periodic return of the seasons.
Nevertheless, the Fifth Element naturally completes the cycle:
5/0 Spirit Death Terror Time
As indicated, Spirit may be also considered the "zeroth" element, coming before Fire.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
The Letter Forms
The Greek letters labeling the Pentagram encode the developmental sequence of the Elements in their forms:
1. EI (epsilon iota) = Fire: five strokes
2. A (alpha) = Air: four strokes (with broken crossbar)
3. U (upsilon) = Water: three strokes
4. G (gamma) = Earth: two strokes
5. I (iota) = Spirit: one stroke
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
The Planets
Ptolemy defines the Qualities of the Five Minor Planets as follows: Venus is predominantly Wet and assigned to Air; Jupiter is Hot and assigned to Fire, Mars is Dry and assigned to Earth, Saturn is Cold and assigned to Water. Mercury is neutral in itself, but can combine with the other planets, so we assign it to Spirit.
Thus we have:
Mercury
Mars Jupiter
Saturn Venus
According to Ptolemy the two Planets on the right (Jupiter, Venus) are beneficent, the two on the left (Mars, Saturn) are malevolent; Mercury is neutral.
In Babylonian astrological tablets dating back to at least the fourth century BCE, the Minor Planets are assigned to Signs of the Zodiac in the order Jupiter, Venus, Saturn, Mars, Jupiter, etc. (Rochberg-Halton). That is, they are assigned according to the descending cycle of elements: Fire, Air, Water, Earth. Therefore, Jupiter is Lord of the Aries-Leo-Sagittarius triplicity, Venus of Taurus-Virgo-Capricorn, Saturn of Gemini-Libra-Aquarius and Mars of Cancer-Scorpio-Pisces. The Fixed Signs of these triplicities correspond to the Seasons, as already enumerated: Air-Taurus-Spring-Wet, Fire-Leo-Summer-Hot, Earth-Scorpio-Autumn-Dry, Water-Aquarius-Winter-Cold. (These are not the elemental association now current in astrology, which apparently derive from Vetius Valens' Anthologia, although they are consistent with Ptolemy's Tetrabiblos; both date from the 2nd. cent. CE.)
The Greater Lamps, the Sun and Moon, do not have a place on the Pentagram, but stand above it, the Moon on the left and the Sun on the right. They govern the two Shamanic Paths: The Left-hand Path (Widdershins) is the Way of the Moon, which descends to the Underworld by means of the element Earth and the Water below it (i.e. the Abyss). The Right-hand Path is the Way of the Sun, which ascends to the Heavens by means of the elements Air and the Fire above it (the Celestial Fire). Both Paths are valid and appropriate according to circumstances.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
The Four Functions and the Self
Four Gods are conventionally associated with the Mundane Elements in the obvious way:
Jupiter (Fire)
Juno (Air)
Neptune (Water)
Ceres (Earth)
Situated naturally with Jung's Four Functions:
Feeling (Wet) opposite Thinking (Dry)
Intuition (Hot) opposite Sensation (Cold)
The Transcendent Self (Spirit) stands above them all.
The Wet/Dry functions are "evaluative," the Hot/Cold are "experiential." Four Gods correspond to the Four Functions:
Venus (Feeling, love)
Minerva (Thinking, wisdom)
Jupiter (Intuition, the "bolt from the blue")
Neptune (Sensation, lord of the earth/physical reality).
Thus we have:
Element Deities Function Power Planet
-------------------------------------------------
Spirit Mercury Self Divine Mercury
Fire Jupiter Intuition Hot Jupiter
Air Hera, Aphrodite Feeling Wet Venus
Water Neptune Sensation Cold Saturn
Earth Ceres, Minerva Thinking Dry Mars
The Four Functions correspond to the suits of the Minor Arcana by way of the Powers: Intuition-Hot-Wands (Jupiter), Feeling-Wet-Cups (Juno, Venus), Sensation-Cold-Pentacles (Neptune, Saturn), Thinking-Dry-Swords (Minerva, Mars). The Transcendental Self corresponds to the Major Arcana (the Archetypal Realm), associated with Mercury (the Magician), the Psychopomp (Soul-guide) who shows us the way between the worlds. (See The Pythagorean Tarot for more.)
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
The Alchemical Great Work
In accord with the Organic Cycle, the points of the Pentagram correspond to the Stages of the Great Work in Alchemy. The first stage is Nigredo (Blackening), corresponding to Water-Cold-Winter-Saturn; it is the stage which causes the dissolution of old structures and their reduction to Prima Materia (Prime Matter). The next stage is Albedo (Whitening), corresponding to Air-Wet-Spring-Venus; it is the purification stage, in which the Prima Materia is cleansed so that it is devoid of all properties and can accept the Tincture. Next is Citrinitas (Yellowing), corresponding to Fire-Hot-Summer-Jupiter; it is the stage in which the Prima Materia receives the fiery Golden Tincture. Finally we have the Rubedo (Reddening), corresponding to Earth-Dry-Autumn-Mars; it is a paradoxical stage, for it is associated with Ios or Venenum, the Venomous Potion. It can be the highest stage of the Alchemical Process, the Iosis (becoming reddish-purple) in which the Philosophers Stone is produced, which has an excess of the Tincture, and so can transmute other matter. However, it can also be a stage of excess, the Adustio (Rusting or Browning) which destroys the Work accomplished (returning it to dry, inanimate matter), whose only use is as the raw material for another Nigredo. This is why the ascent to the Quintessence occurs between the Citrinitas and the Rubedo. In a proper rotation the substance will be progressively elevated until it reaches the Quintessence at the apex of the Pyramid.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Colors
In addition to the colors associated with the Elements and Powers by virtue of Alchemy (Water/Cold=Black, Air/Wet=White, Fire/Hot=Yellow, Earth/Dry=Red), there are also secondary colors, Green for Air/Wet and Blue for Water/Cold. First, Green is strongly associated with Venus-Spring-Wet-Air. Venus's epithet, "the Cyprian" derives from Cypris, Her home, as do the word "copper," "cuprous," etc. Further, Green is the complementary to Red, which is the color of Mars who stands opposite to Venus on the Mundane Plane (as the Red of Autumn opposes the Green of Spring). Second, Blue is associated with Saturn-Winter-Cold-Water, for Blue is complementary to Yellow, which is the color of Jupiter, who stands opposite Saturn (as the sunny Yellow of Summer opposes the icy Blue of Winter).
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
The Directions
The points of the Pentagram correspond to the Four Directions and Up. Unfortunately, there are many ways the directions can be assigned. The assignment most commonly used in the Renaissance makes Water=West, Air=South, Fire=East, Earth=North, which makes the perspective from above toward the Northeast. Another approach, adopted by Ashmole, is to assign them on the basis of the Organic Cycle and the motion of the Sun (Air=Wet=Morning=East, Fire=Hot=Midday=South, Earth=Dry=Evening=West, Water=Cold=Night=North). (With these assignments our perspective is below the Pyramid looking toward the Northeast.) Ptolemy assigns them on the basis of the Four Winds and their Qualities (which gives Water=Cold=North, Air=Wet=West, Fire=Hot=South, Earth=Dry=East). (With these assignments our perspective is above the Pyramid looking toward the Southeast, the sacred direction of the Etruscans.)
In Wiccan traditions, with their directional associations (East-Air, South-Fire, West-Water, North-Earth), but don't want to get the alchemical structure of the elements garbled, then use the Ptolemaic assignments. Instead of Air, think Dry East Wind; instead of Fire, Hot South Wind; instead of Water, Wet West Wind; instead of Earth, Cold North Wind. That is, you will be working in terms of the Powers, which have the correct oppositional structure, rather than the Elements, which don't.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
As is well known, Plato associates the Five Elements with the Five Platonic Solids (Tim. 55c-65c), and Kepler made a similar association between the Planets and the Platonic Solids. So let's lay out the Platonic Solids around the Wiccan Pentacle; I'll abbreviate the Solids by their number of faces:
4 Tetrahedron Fire
6 Cube Earth
8 Octahedron Air
12 Dodecahedron Spirit
20 Icosahedron Water
This is the result:
12
8 20
6 4
Notice that the Platonic Solids fall around the circumference in increasing order of number of faces. Since the Elemental Pentagram is its dual, we know that it can also produce the series 4, 6, 8, 12, 20 (by tracing the Pentagram).
