Since there have been a couple of topics here discussed about Benjamin and the "beloved disciple," I would like to suggest there is a connection between Benjamin and John (assuming that he is the beloved disciple) and the church in Philadelphia. I am assuming Joseph as a type for Jesus as well. I really don't know the meaning of all this...but here is some observations I hope someone here finds interesting enough for continued study:

The first thing Joseph said to Benjamin was:

(Gen 43:29 KJV) And he lifted up his eyes, and saw his brother Benjamin, his mother's son, and said, Is this your younger brother, of whom ye spake unto me? And he said, God be gracious unto thee, my son.

"God is gracious" is the meaning of John's name. Benjamin's name means "son of the right hand." Jesus places upon John in Revelation his right hand....as though he was blessing a son:

(Rev 1:17 KJV) And when I saw him, I fell at his feet as dead. And he laid his right hand upon me, saying unto me, Fear not; I am the first and the last:

Assuming the disciple "whom Jesus loved" is John.....it is interesting to note the tribe of Benjamin's blessing from Moses:

(Deu 33:12 KJV) And of Benjamin he said, The beloved of the LORD shall dwell in safety by him; and the LORD shall cover him all the day long, and he shall dwell between his shoulders.

Benjamin is the "beloved of the Lord"......John is the disciple "whom Jesus loved." Benjamin dwelled in safety in the Lord....between his shoulders. The disciple whom Jesus loved also leaned against the bosom (a place between his shoulders) of Jesus....a place of safety:

(John 13:23 KJV) Now there was leaning on Jesus' bosom one of his disciples, whom Jesus loved.

The church in Philadelphia (brotherly love) also is protected from the hour or day of temptation:

(Rev 3:10 KJV) Because thou hast kept the word of my patience, I also will keep thee from the hour of temptation, which shall come upon all the world, to try them that dwell upon the earth.

"Keep" meaning "to guard against loss or injury."

The church in Philadelphia (brotherly love) is "loved"...as Benjamin (the "beloved of the Lord") and the disciple (John) are loved:

(Rev 3:9 KJV) Behold, I will make them of the synagogue of Satan, which say they are Jews, and are not, but do lie; behold, I will make them to come and worship before thy feet, and to know that I have loved thee.

And continuing the "beloved" theme....Jesus tells the chuch in Philadelphia that he has the "key of David"...."David" means "beloved" or "favorite."

Joseph and Benjamin were brothers of the same mother, Rachel. Jesus, in a sense, made the disciple whom he loved his brother at the cross....by making his mother the mother of John:

John 19: 26 When Jesus therefore saw his mother, and the disciple standing by, whom he loved, he saith unto his mother, Woman, behold thy son!
27 Then saith he to the disciple, Behold thy mother! And from that hour that disciple took her unto his own home.

The address to the church in Philadelphia also carries a hint of this. John takes Jesus's mother into his own home.....he kept his mother.....the church in Philadelphia also keeps Jesus' word:

(Rev 3:8 KJV) I know thy works: behold, I have set before thee an open door, and no man can shut it: for thou hast a little strength, and hast kept my word, and hast not denied my name.

And Jerusalem from above is mentioned as well.....Jerusalem from above is the "mother of us all" (Galations 4:26.)

(Rev 3:12 KJV) Him that overcometh will I make a pillar in the temple of my God, and he shall go no more out: and I will write upon him the name of my God, and the name of the city of my God, which is new Jerusalem, which cometh down out of heaven from my God: and I will write upon him my new name.

The church in Philadelphia had "little strength".....Benjamin also was "little"....the youngest...Saul was of Benjamin....the smallest tribe.

(1 Sam 9:21 KJV) And Saul answered and said, Am not I a Benjamite, of the smallest of the tribes of Israel? and my family the least of all the families of the tribe of Benjamin? wherefore then speakest thou so to me?

The tribe of Benjamin was "little:"

(Psa 68:27 KJV) There is little Benjamin with their ruler, the princes of Judah and their council, the princes of Zebulun, and the princes of Naphtali.

Paul whose name means "little" was from the tribe of Benjamin.

John described himself as the "servant" of Jesus Christ:

(Rev 1:1 KJV) The Revelation of Jesus Christ, which God gave unto him, to show unto his servants things which must shortly come to pass; and he sent and signified it by his angel unto his servant John:

The man who had the silver cup of Joseph (who was Benjamin) in his possession would become the "servant" of Joseph:

(Gen 44:17 KJV) And he said, God forbid that I should do so: but the man in whose hand the cup is found, he shall be my servant; and as for you, get you up in peace unto your father.

One can almost see that the silver cup of Joseph could be the "Revelation" of Jesus Christ (which was given to him from God) in which Christ uses to show the things which come to pass.....Joseph used the silver cup to "divine:"

(Gen 44:5 KJV) Is not this it in which my lord drinketh, and whereby indeed he divineth? ye have done evil in so doing.

The silver cup was found in the "mouth" of Benjamin's sack.....Revelation was shown to John by a "messenger"....angel. John was used as a mouthpiece for the Lord Jesus Christ to the seven churches. Joseph set his "eyes" on Benjamin.....perhaps a spiritual meaning would be that he set his knowledge on him....Christ imparts knowledge of the holy to his servants:

(Gen 44:21 KJV) And thou saidst unto thy servants, Bring him down unto me, that I may set mine eyes upon him.

Also, Joseph seems to be indicating Benjamin is his mouth:

(Gen 45:12 KJV) And, behold, your eyes see, and the eyes of my brother Benjamin, that it is my mouth that speaketh unto you.

In fact, the stone of Benjamin is the Jasper stone......"Jasper" or "yashpeh" means "he has a mouth." Jewish sources say that Benjamin withheld the information that the ruler of Egypt was Joseph their brother...in other words....he did not open his mouth....perhaps this is true but it could possibly mean in addition that Benjamin was the one favored by Joseph to tell his father, Jacob, all of his words... which revived the spirit of Jacob:

(Gen 45:27 KJV) And they told him all the words of Joseph, which he had said unto them: and when he saw the wagons which Joseph had sent to carry him, the spirit of Jacob their father revived:

It is mentioned to the church in Philadelphia that Jesus would write his new name on those who overcome....perhaps this new name is in relation to Joseph's new name given to him by Pharoah:

(Gen 41:45 KJV) And Pharaoh called Joseph's name Zaphnathpaaneah; and he gave him to wife Asenath the daughter of Potipherah priest of On. And Joseph went out over all the land of Egypt.

Although the meaning of the name "Zaphnathpaaneah" is uncertain, most contend that it means "revealer of secrets".....or "revealer of hidden things"......in other words, the overcomer in the church in Philadelphia would have the honor of interpreting the scriptures....to reveal the hidden secrets in the Word of God...to be a mouth for Christ?

Hey Shawn,

Those are some very interesting correlations. I'll talk more when I get back from work.

God bless!

Another observation: the silver cup in the mouth of Benjamin's bag...the Hebrew word for "cup" is "gebiya".....which is the primary word that "Gibeon", "Geba" and "Gibeah" are derived from....these are cities that were located within the land alloted to the tribe of Benjamin. We have the cup (gibiya) within Benjamin's "sack"....the Hebrew word is "'amtachath" which means "expansive...spread out".....and we have the cities of Gibeon and Geba (silver cup?) within the territory or land (something expansive?) of Benjamin:

(Josh 21:17 KJV) And out of the tribe of Benjamin, Gibeon with her suburbs, Geba with her suburbs,

What does it mean? I don't know. Some interesting events that happened in Gibeon: The sun stood still upon Gibeon:

(Josh 10:12 KJV) Then spake Joshua to the LORD in the day when the LORD delivered up the Amorites before the children of Israel, and he said in the sight of Israel, Sun, stand thou still upon Gibeon; and thou, Moon, in the valley of Ajalon.

Gibeon was the place where Solomon asked for wisdom:

1 Kings 3: 4 And the king went to Gibeon to sacrifice there; for that was the great high place: a thousand burnt offerings did Solomon offer upon that altar.
5 In Gibeon the LORD appeared to Solomon in a dream by night: and God said, Ask what I shall give thee.

As the sun stood in Gibeon, Saul (from the tribe of Benjamin...who ruled from Gibeah) was told to "stand still" as Samuel shows him the Word of God. Interestingly, "Samuel" means "heard of God"...."heard" ="to hear intelligently ".....stand still to hear the Word of God intelligently?

(1 Sam 9:27 KJV) And as they were going down to the end of the city, Samuel said to Saul, Bid the servant pass on before us, (and he passed on,) but stand thou still a while, that I may show thee the word of God.

Saul (which means "asked"....ask for wisdom?), shortly after goes to Gibeah of God (the silver cup?) where the Spirit of the Lord came upon him in power:

1 Samuel 10:5 "After that you will go to Gibeah of God, where there is a Philistine outpost. As you approach the town, you will meet a procession of prophets coming down from the high place with lyres, tambourines, flutes and harps being played before them, and they will be prophesying.
6 The Spirit of the LORD will come upon you in power, and you will prophesy with them; and you will be changed into a different person.

One more note.....the silver cup was "hid" within Benjamin's sack. Saul, from the tribe of Benjamin, also was found hid among the "baggage:"

1 Samuel 10:20 When Samuel brought all the tribes of Israel near, the tribe of Benjamin was chosen.
21 Then he brought forward the tribe of Benjamin, clan by clan, and Matri's clan was chosen. Finally Saul son of Kish was chosen. But when they looked for him, he was not to be found.
22 So they inquired further of the LORD, "Has the man come here yet?" And the LORD said, "Yes, he has hidden himself among the baggage."

And to ramble on just a little more...

To the church in Philadelphia (brotherly love), Jesus warns to let no man take your crown:

(Rev 3:11 KJV) Behold, I come quickly: hold that fast which thou hast, that no man take thy crown.

It seems to me to be another connection to the tribe of Benjamin.....specifically Saul who lost his crown....the kingdom of Israel....over sparing a man's life.....the man Agag, the king of the Amalekites.

1 Samuel 15: 8 And he took Agag the king of the Amalekites alive, and utterly destroyed all the people with the edge of the sword.
9 But Saul and the people spared Agag, and the best of the sheep, and of the oxen, and of the fatlings, and the lambs, and all that was good, and would not utterly destroy them: but every thing that was vile and refuse, that they destroyed utterly.
10 Then came the word of the LORD unto Samuel, saying,
11 It repenteth me that I have set up Saul to be king: for he is turned back from following me, and hath not performed my commandments. And it grieved Samuel; and he cried unto the LORD all night.

It seems that the Benjamin, John, church in Philadelphia connection involves being the mouth of the Lord. The two-edged sword comes out of the mouth of the Lord....."two-edged"......"distomos"....means "two mouths." One of Benjamin's sons was "Muppim" which means "double mouth." Another two-edged dagger or sword is that of Ehud.....from the tribe of Benjamin:

Judges 3: 15 But when the children of Israel cried unto the LORD, the LORD raised them up a deliverer, Ehud the son of Gera, a Benjamite, a man lefthanded: and by him the children of Israel sent a present unto Eglon the king of Moab.
16 But Ehud made him a dagger which had two edges, of a cubit length; and he did gird it under his raiment upon his right thigh.

The "right thigh".....an allusion to the name written King of kings and Lord of lords in Revelation 19:16. What follows is rather violent.....Ehud tells the king of Moab that he has a secret or hidden message from God (perhaps the hidden meaning that is revealed to the enemies of God.....the Word of God is like a two-edged sword):

18 And when he had made an end to offer the present, he sent away the people that bare the present.
19 But he himself turned again from the quarries that were by Gilgal, and said, I have a secret errand unto thee, O king: who said, Keep silence. And all that stood by him went out from him.
20 And Ehud came unto him; and he was sitting in a summer parlour, which he had for himself alone. And Ehud said, I have a message from God unto thee. And he arose out of his seat.
21 And Ehud put forth his left hand, and took the dagger from his right thigh, and thrust it into his belly:

There is a theme: the mouth is closed and then opened....Ehud was "left-handed"....Hebrew "itter"....meaning "shut up." In Revelation, to the church in Philadelphia, we see that the Lord has the key of David.....to open or shut:

(Rev 3:7 KJV) And to the angel of the church in Philadelphia write; These things saith he that is holy, he that is true, he that hath the key of David, he that openeth, and no man shutteth; and shutteth, and no man openeth;

At the announcement of the birth of John the Baptist (another connection)....his father, Zechariah, did not believe the angel....so his mouth was shut:

Luke 1: 19 And the angel answering said unto him, I am Gabriel, that stand in the presence of God; and am sent to speak unto thee, and to show thee these glad tidings.
20 And, behold, thou shalt be dumb, and not able to speak, until the day that these things shall be performed, because thou believest not my words, which shall be fulfilled in their season.

The church in Philadelphia is of "little strength"......it is to be strengthened.....hence the meaning of the name of Ezekiel...."strengthened of God".........he also was made dumb:

(Ezek 3:26 KJV) And I will make thy tongue cleave to the roof of thy mouth, that thou shalt be dumb, and shalt not be to them a reprover: for they are a rebellious house.

But his mouth was to be opened:

(Ezek 24:27 KJV) In that day shall thy mouth be opened to him which is escaped, and thou shalt speak, and be no more dumb: and thou shalt be a sign unto them; and they shall know that I am the LORD.

(Ezek 3:27 KJV) But when I speak with thee, I will open thy mouth, and thou shalt say unto them, Thus saith the Lord GOD; He that heareth, let him hear; and he that forbeareth, let him forbear: for they are a rebellious house.

There is a connection between Ezekiel and John...the opening of the mouth to eat the roll or book and then to speak again the Word of God:

Ezekiel 3:1 Moreover he said unto me, Son of man, eat that thou findest; eat this roll, and go speak unto the house of Israel.
2 So I opened my mouth, and he caused me to eat that roll.
3 And he said unto me, Son of man, cause thy belly to eat, and fill thy bowels with this roll that I give thee. Then did I eat it; and it was in my mouth as honey for sweetness.
4 And he said unto me, Son of man, go, get thee unto the house of Israel, and speak with my words unto them.

Revelation 10: 9 And I went unto the angel, and said unto him, Give me the little book. And he said unto me, Take it, and eat it up; and it shall make thy belly bitter, but it shall be in thy mouth sweet as honey.
10 And I took the little book out of the angel's hand, and ate it up; and it was in my mouth sweet as honey: and as soon as I had eaten it, my belly was bitter.
11 And he said unto me, Thou must prophesy again before many peoples, and nations, and tongues, and kings.

Hey Shawn,

Just wanted to mention that you continue to find many interesting connections. Unfortunately, I'm leaving for work so I can't comment more right now. I'll talk more this evening.

God bless!
