For far too long women have settled for second best when it comes to rights afforded them in the Bible, because they have been deceived by men. The same lame reasoning and tired excuses are used over and over again, such as “The Bible gives women more rights than they had in other cultures of the same time period”, or “God’s natural order is for men to be the leaders”. These and countless other worn out justifications used by men to deny women their equal human rights, need to be rejected and exposed for what they are…constructions made from the minds of men who want to control women. It’s time for the women of the world to know that they are indeed entitled to the same human rights as men and to stand up for those rights, regardless of what an ancient book like the Bible says. The first place to start is by taking a second look at the masculine nature of the biblical god.
One of the worst aspects of the faith that the Bible teaches is in promoting the idea that one group of people (men) have the god given right to deny the other group (women) the same freedom of human rights that they enjoy. To be able to live up to ones full potential as a human is a right that all people should share regardless of gender, or race. We all share this planet equally, and all should partake in its abundance, the male gender has not been given exclusive rights to ruler-ship over the female gender as biblical teaching promotes. Unfortunately, for the believer the baggage that the Bible carries with it can never be discarded, because it is built into its patriarchal structure, which begins with a sole male god as creator. Biblical doctrines originating in Genesis place the male as the leader, with ruler-ship over the female given as a foundational decree, declaring that “Woman was made for the man”; this doctrine is then reiterated in the New Testament.
Gen.2:22 And the rib, which the LORD God had taken from man, made he a woman, and brought her unto the man.
Gen.3:16 Unto the woman he said, I will greatly multiply thy sorrow and thy conception; in sorrow thou shalt bring forth children; and thy desire shall be to thy husband, and he shall rule over thee.
1Cor.11:9 Neither was the man created for the woman; but the woman for the man.
1Cor.11:3 But I would have you know, that the head of every man is Christ; and the head of the woman is the man; and the head of Christ is God
These teachings are fundamental to the biblical story, beginning with the original transgression (caused by Eve) which according to the Bible introduced sin into the human picture. Usually the more fundamental branches of Christianity adhere more strongly to the biblical teaching of the subjugation of women, which in many cases leads to women being denied their equal human rights.
Throughout the Bible a women’s value is governed by their desirability to men. In the Old Testament the worth of females is judged in accordance with whether or not they are desirable to a man as the below verses exemplify.
Deut.21:10-11 When thou goest forth to war against thine enemies, and the LORD thy God hath delivered them into thine hands, and thou hast taken them captive, And seest among the captives a beautiful woman, and hast a desire unto her, that thou wouldest have her to thy wife;…14) And it shall be, if thou have no delight in her, then thou shalt let her go whither she will; but thou shalt not sell her at all for money, thou shalt not make merchandise of her, because thou hast humbled her.
In the New Testament the apostle Paul’s interpretation of the Garden story is used to justify the second class status of women, intimating that woman was the cause of the fall of humankind and that is the reason she was placed under the headship of the man.
1Tim.2:11-14 Let the woman learn in silence with all subjection. But I suffer not a woman to teach, nor to usurp authority over the man, but to be in silence. For Adam was first formed, then Eve. And Adam was not deceived, but the woman being deceived was in the transgression.
So, women, it’s time to wake up and see the Bible for what it is…a book written by men, about a male god who decrees that women are to be denied equal human rights because the first woman Eve was responsible for humankind’s fall into sin, and for that original transgression all women are to be placed in subjugation to men and stripped of their equality. The Bible is a book about authority, obedience and ruler-ship…simple as that. The masculine warrior god Yahweh, rules over men and demands obedience while the men rule over the women with the authority given them by Yahweh and demand subjugation…that is the order of the kingdom of god and that is what the Bible is all about…AUTHORITY and RULER-SHIP.
