I just bought my tickets for four days of workshops and lectures relating to the serious academic and spiritual study of psychedelic substances.
It is the 25th Anniversary Conference of MAPS - the Multidisciplinary Association for Psychedelic Studies (http://www.maps.org/).
Alex Grey will be there. I saw him last year at the Bicycle Day conference held in San Francisco on April 19. It was in commemoration of the first intentional LSD experience conducted by its discoverer Albert Hofmann in 1943. Here's an intuitive "portrait" of Dr. Hofmann called "St. Albert and the LSD Revelation Revolution" by Alex Grey [see www.AlexGrey.com (http://%22http://www.AlexGrey.com)]:

Richard,
By chance, have you read Grof's "When The Impossible Happens: Adventures In Non-Ordinary Reality"? Excellent book on some hard to explain phenomenon...at least according to current scientific dogma...and that includes the died-in-the-wool atheists. :winking0071:

I own three or four of Grof's books, but not that one. I'll be seeing him at the conference. Indeed, I'll be having dinner with him and his wife (and a few hundred other folks).
I love his story in the intro in The Holotropic Mind about what it was like to "discover God" as a 20 year old subject under the influence of a chemical during a scientific experiment in a laboratory run by an atheist in a communist country behind the Iron Curtain! Talk about irony! I love it! Grof is a great man.
I'd be interested to find out how many atheists there are amongst the serious psychedelic researchers. There may be a lot who reject "theism" but I doubt there are many, if any, who have a purely "materialistic" view of Reality.

I think I've read The Holotropic Mind...the Intro does sound familiar...and awesome. Unfortunately, Grof's books went in the dumpster during my last...awe, you know the story, damn!
Yeah, I think you'll find a lot of deist and very few theist...and just as few atheist.
Deism rules! :sunny:

I'm glad I retained some semblance of reason when I went fundamentalistic. I only burned the explicitly occultic books like the stuff from Crowley, et. al. And a lot of "new age" pablum that I'll never miss (nor buy again). My Jungian psychology books were always safe.

Man, I even got rid of (read "threw into dumpster") all my successful thinking books, like Hill's "Think and Grow Rich", "The Magic of Thinking Big", etc. and all the others along that line, CDs, DVDs, books, you name it.
I tell you, nothing says it better than the title from this awesome clip:

Here's a pic of the mean green machine that flew me from Yakima to Seattle on my way down to San Francisco for the MAPS convention:

What an amazing time to be alive! Flying through the sky to a convention celebrating our ability to make the mind fly to the highest places with meditation, breathwork, and psycehdelic entheogens.
I'm going to the City to hang with like minded folks for a whole week!
:woohoo:

Hey folks!
The conference has been amazing. I'll be writing about it for the next few days. But I have an all day workshop today on Psychedelic Neuroscience that will be reviewing the latest research on precisely how psychedlics affect the brain.
I alos took pics of the amazing art that filled the dance hall:
