View Full Version : What is God?
What is God?
Is God an inanimate object? If so how could God think and behave like humans? How could God speak? How could God have emotions like anger and love? How could God have wisdom and knowledge? How could God have the skill and knowledge to create the earth, moon, sun, planets and the stars? How could God set laws? How could God destroy and save?
Or is God a human imagination?....and thus the supernatural events recorded in the Bible and the symbolic meanings are just works of highly creative and imaginative people?
Or is God an ET whose technological advances and knowledge are far ahead of humans and thus is able to do things beyond current human's abilities? They are thus highly advanced in their thoughts and ways. And have emotions, thoughts, intelligence and behaviors like humans.
Or is God a divine energy or force capable of knowledge, creation, emotions and intelligence way beyond current human abilities.
Many Blessings.

That's a good question, but one that's impossible to answer in the positive....it can only be answered in the negative, and that is: What God is Not.
1. God does not behave today in the same manner which he is presented in the OT.
2. God does not usually (if at all) answer prayer or intervene in human lives
3. God does not today speak to his creations in a clear and unambiguous way
4. God does not today manifest himself to people in a tangible way
The truth of the matter is we really know nothing of what God is....even though God could manifest himself to every person on the planet in a clear and unambiguous way, for whatever reason he has chosen not to.
Blessings,
Rose

I would rather we stick to the question of the topic of What is God and not What God is Not. On a personal note, I see God as a divine energy or force capable of knowledge, creation, emotions and intelligence way beyond current human abilities. And as such He could transform Himself into anything He wants. I see angels as ET and assistants to God. I never see God as human imagination.
To answer your questions, please see my answers in red:
1. God does not behave today in the same manner which he is presented in the OT.
The reason why God do not behave today like in OT is because humans have developed friom very evil in the OT to more righteous from the seeds of Noah. As such the punishment was not as harsh as in the OT. Would the law continues ro punish a criminal in prison severely when the criminal has turned into a new leaf and behaved in a repentent way. This is also the reason why jesus came in the first century to make a new covenant. ...a covenant that is kinder.
2. God does not usually (if at all) answer prayer or intervene in human lives
God answered prayers as and when appropriate. God intervenes in human affairs without us even realizing. Was the defeat of Hitler by God or by chance? Was the victories of Allies in WW1 and WW2 by God or by chance? Is the BibleWheel by chance or by God? The other reason why God do not directly intervene in human affairs is because human society have developed and matured in such a way that direct intervention by God is not necessary. This is also to allow human to experience what life is like without direct intervention from God. Do you directly intervene in your children's affairs when they have become adults? No, but may do so indirectly.
3. God does not today speak to his creations in a clear and unambiguous way
The reason is because he wants us to sincerely seek Him and the truth and to find out for ourselves more about God and what God really wants from us. Such efforts willl prove our faithfulness and perseverence in wanting God to come into our lives. The more we know about Him the more we will do the will of the Father in heaven and the more God will help us. Remember the gate is wide but few will enter it. We must put every effort necessary by our own free will if we want to be accepted by God into the gates of heaven.
4. God does not today manifest himself to people in a tangible way
He would do so once the time is ripe and when the harvest is full. He is with us tilll the end of times and may have intervene in our lives and affairs without us even noticing it. God is ominpotent....yesterday, today and tomorrow. It is better to manifest Himself an an intangible way first so that we could prove our faith, perseverance and belief in Him that he will one day came back to reveal to us and accept us into His kingdom......remember the parable of the ten virgins? 5 came prepared and 5 unprepared...what happened to the 5 that came unprepared when Jesus returned?
Amen.
Many Blessings.

Hey Cheow,
I'm glad you brought up this question. I was going to bring it up myself in response to your accusations of atheism. We can't very well talk about atheism is we don't first define theism in general, and Christian theism in particular.
I will begin with my primary problem with Christian theism. On the one hand, Christians are taught that God is a "Zeus-like" super-person with human attributes like desires, anger, love, hate, and a will. On the other hand, Christians are taught that God is absolutely transcendent and not like a human person in any way at all. For example, we are taught that God has absolute omniscience, which means he never had an opportunity to make any decisions or choices about anything because he always "knew" what he would do before he did it. Therefore, God cannot be moved by any prayers, God cannot love because love requires choice, and so on .... in other words, God is nothing like a person at all! This view presents God as something like an abstract principle of "law of nature" or as you put it, an "inanimate object."
It would be very helpful if you could state what you mean when you say "God." As far as I can tell, the concept is incoherent. Therefore, it is not that I "deny" the existence of the Christian God, but rather that I have no idea what I am supposed to believe.
All the best.

I tend to believe that God is a Spirit. Jesus says to the Samaritan woman that the well:
John 4:
24 God is Spirit, and those who worship Him must worship in spirit and truth.”
Consider also these other verses:
Matthew 3:16
When He had been baptized, Jesus came up immediately from the water; and behold, the heavens were opened to Him, and He saw the Spirit of God descending like a dove and alighting upon Him.
Luke 1:35
And the angel answered and said to her, “The Holy Spirit will come upon you, and the power of the Highest will overshadow you; therefore, also, that Holy One who is to be born will be called the Son of God.
John 3:34
For He whom God has sent speaks the words of God, for God does not give the Spirit by measure.
Acts 2:17
‘ And it shall come to pass in the last days, says God, That I will pour out of My Spirit on all flesh;Your sons and your daughters shall prophesy,Your young men shall see visions,Your old men shall dream dreams.
There are dozens of passages that use the word "Spirit". What then is a Spirit? Most people define a spirit as a type of ghost or phantom. But that is based on mere myth. It is a form of "inspiration". Thus I believe the Biblical meaning of the word "spirit" is the activating or essential principle of influencing a person [example: acted in a spirit of helpfulness]
God is the "Holy" Spirit, which means to be perfect/complete. The oppossing spirits to that of God are unclean spirits; that is, spirits that inspire us to sin against our neighbor or ourselves.
Thus, the Holy Spirit is not a kind of magical power or mind controlling entity. It is influential by design, capable of not only inspiring man, but beast or even atoms. When God said, "Let there be light", He did not speak through a physical voice as humans have. His Spirit "inspired" the scientific nature of all existence to accomplish what He wills.
What then is God? In my opinion, Jesus answered that question plainly. God is a Spirit that cannot be touched, or tasted. It can only be felt through our inner conscious. Mary became pregnant through the power of the Holy Spirit. The outcome was God (Spirit) taking on human form, and becoming the "Son" who is above all "man", hence the phrase, "The Son of Man". Jesus was, in my opinion, God's Spirit in human form. Thus, in my opinion, I do not think of God as a Trinity; that is to say, a Father figure sitting in the head seat, with his Son on the right seat, and the Holy Spirit on the left seat. They are All One and the same God. God reveals Himself to us in our spirits, but it was His body (The Son) which made it possible, namely because God dwelt among men, and lived a perfect life as a human. Thus, God took from "Him", and gave to us, so that we could become the righteousness of God. He took the experiences as a human being, and placed that within us. God's Spirit fell upon Moses. God's Spirit also descended upon Jesus in the form of a dove. The dove itself was not the Spirit, but that the Spirit came upon Him in the form of a dove, or at least what appeared to be a dove.
Therefore, the answer is the God is an invisible Spirit who can manifest Himself in nearly any way He chooses. His last form of "visible" manifestation was through Jesus, the Son of man. His current form of manifestation is within us. And after death, and if we are accepted, we shall exist as He does, in the eternal realm of life.

Paul told Timothy......
God is uncorruptible,
un-seen,
the only wise God............we value and esteem Him through Jesus, His Son, Who is the express image of God.
God, the Father, is chiefly known through Jesus, the Son.
God, Who spoke through the prophets in times past, now speaks to us through His Son through whom He made the ages.......He is the God of the ages, the King of the Ages Who reveals Himself in a progressive revelation, first through the things which He has made which reveal some of His hidden attributes.
If you seek to know the Father,......get to know His Son.
