The Bible tells us that God is good and His mercy is everlasting - if that is the case then at any point in this life or the next if someone asks for God's mercy they will receive it....right?

Rose, it's not just asking for mercy but important thing is doing the will of the Father who is on heaven. You may ask for mercy but if you do not do the will of the Father in heaven, you simply cannot enter the kingdom of heaven. This is stated very clearly if only you can accept it or better still allegorize it to suit your assertion:

"Not everyone who says to me, 'Lord, Lord,' will enter the kingdom of heaven, but only he who does the will of my Father who is in heaven.

So, are you telling me Cheow that a person on his deathbed that accepts Jesus as his savior, yet has been wicked his whole life will not receive God's mercy?

Faith without works is dead (James 2: 26).
The dead were judged according to what they had done as recorded in the books (Revelation 20).

Anything about being saved by begging for mercy in the above 3 verses? Begging for mercy without doing the will of the Father in heaven i.e. good deeds and faith without good deeds will not lead you into the kingdom of heaven. Matthew 7:21 is very clear....take it, leave it or allegorize it

So, then I guess what your saying is salvation is not about God having mercy on us, but rather about good works....:confused:

What is the will of the Father in heaven? In John 6:40 Jesus tells us what it is.
For it is my Father’s will that all who see his Son and believe in him should have eternal life. I will raise them up at the last day.'
So doing the will of the Father is first of all believing in His Son and all who do so will receive eternal life.
In Romans 10:13 it says all who call upon the name of the Lord will be saved.
So if in a person's last dying breath he calls upon the name of the Lord and believes in the name of Jesus he will be saved and go to heaven no matter how wicked his life had been.
If you look at Matt 7:21-22 in context I think you will see that Jesus was talking about people who were just using his name to do various works without really knowing him.
'Not everyone who calls out to me, ‘Lord! Lord!’ will enter the Kingdom of Heaven. Only those who actually do the will of my Father in heaven will enter. 22 On judgment day many will say to me, ‘Lord! Lord! We prophesied in your name and cast out demons in your name and performed many miracles in your name.’ 23 But I will reply, ‘I never knew you. Get away from me, you who break God’s laws.’
We can see they were just doing works in his name without really knowing him, that is why he said "I never knew you". They had never done the will of the Father by truly believing in the name of His Son.

:congrats: Good point Clifford and you put it in a much better way than me.
Doing good works without faith in truly believing in Jesus and repentance will not lead us into the kingdom of heaven. In summary, to ask for mercy from God, there must be sincere faith and repentance. It is not as easy as a person on his deathbed that accepts Jesus as his savior without sincere faith and repentance, yet has been wicked his whole life to be able receive God's mercy.
I would also like to add another verse regarding the meaning of the will of the Father:
Matthew 18:14Even so it is not the will of your Father which is in heaven, that one of these little ones should perish. (little ones mean those who are innocent, weak, humble, poor etc.).
