View Full Version : Solomon Temple and the New Jerusalem
There may be a connection with the Solomon Temple and the New Jerusalem.
1 Kings 7:25It stood upon twelve oxen, three looking toward the north, and three looking toward the west, and three looking toward the south, and three looking toward the east; and the sea was set above upon them, and all their hind parts were inward.
Revelation 21:12It had a wall great and high, and had twelve gates, and at the gates twelve angels; and names were written thereon, which are the names of the twelve tribes of the children of Israel:
13on the east three gates, on the north three gates, on the south three gates, and on the west three gates.
14And the wall of the city had twelve foundations, and on them the names of the twelve apostles of the Lamb.
There may also be another connection with the Tabernacle, although not very obvious:
1 Chronicle 9:22All these who were chosen to be doorkeepers at the gates were two hundred and twelve. These were reckoned by their genealogy in their villages, whom David and Samuel the seer had ordained in their set office.
23So they and their children had the oversight of the gates of the house of the LORD, namely, the house of the tabernacle, by watches.
24In four quarters were the doorkeepers: toward the east, west, north, and south.
BTW, North, East, West, South may be an anagram for the News, the Good News facing all directions in the house of the Lord.
Many Blessings to all.

Hey Cheow,
You are absolutely correct. The New Jerusalem is modeled after the Temple of Solomon in many ways. That's the whole point of Revelation 21. The Bible teaches that we believers are the temple of the living God. Thus Solomon's Temple is a type of the Church. Just as God indwelled the Temple, He dwells among us.
The architetural plan of the Temple finds therefore a correspondence in the plan of the New Jerusalem. For example, NJ has the shape of a cube, and the only other cube mentioned in Scripture is the Holy of Holies in Solomon's Temple. And so it goes.
God gave the plan of Moses' Tabernacle, Solomon's Temple, Ezekiel's Temple and the New Jerusalem. These plans give us a lifetime of study into the Mind of God and how He designs the plan for our lives.
The Bible is similarly designed and structured like the House of God. This Bible Wheel site offers a wealth of insights into this very subject. The Bible is likewise a "House of God."
Blessings to you,
Victor
Thanks Victor,
Excellent! :thumb:
I knew you would provide us some of your insights. I wonder if there are some more.....
Many Blessings to you.
Hi Cheow,
As Victor mentioned, we could do a lifetime of study into the structure of God's Word and we would still only be scratching the surface.
The interesting thing to note about the description of the New Jerusalem is that only the surrounding foundations, walls, and gates that enclose the Temple are described. Looking within we find no Temple because the Lord is the Temple and the light thereof. This perfectly depicts how the Holy Spirit dwells within the body (structure) of the believer, when our gates are open to receive Him.
.
Rev.21:22 And I saw no temple therein for the Lord God Almighty and the Lamb are the temple of it.....25) And the gates of it shall not be shut at all by day: for there shall be no night there.

God Bless,

This is probably a minor point. I just spent about a year and a half studying the Temple/Tabernacle. For one thing there is more than one Cube in the Temple according to the Mishna and Josephus. The Temple itself has cubical dimensions - although it is shaped like a Lion or a "T". The entire Temple, including the Temple mount, which was a high tower in Jesus' day - is also a cube. (Herod's Temple Only - not Solomons) The walls were 600 feet high - to bedrock - and the four walls were 600 feet square. The symbolic city of God in Revelation is really just a symbolized picture of the New City of God based on Herod's Temple which was what was commonly visualized in the NT. Herods Temple in its day was often referred to as the City of God.
The usual teaching that I have heard over the years is that this cubical city in Revelation is represenative of the cubical Holy of Holies. Changed my mind on this.

Its not just Solomons temple! His was probably the most audacious, however we cannot at the same time forget the others.
The one Moses built was said to have been patterned "after" the heavenly.
And the tabernacle of David, (sometimes called the tent of David, because it was not a building) will be raised in the last day. We are living in the last of the last days, we are post "last days" and the order of worship in the tabernacle of David is our order.
There is an awesome author who explores the 3 temples I mention in detail, I'll try to find his name and post it, all three books are worth the read.
They are simply titled after the name of each temple.
