In the book of Acts the Apostle Peter spoke of what would come to pass in the last days, he called the time they were in the last days which the prophet Joel spoke of. He said that the last days they were in would lead up to the great and notable 'Day of the Lord'.

Acts 2:16-21 But this is that which was spoken by the prophet Joel; And it shall come to pass in the last days, saith God, I will pour out of my Spirit upon all flesh: and your sons and your daughters shall prophesy, and your young men shall see visions, and your old men shall dream dreams: And on my servants and on my handmaidens I will pour out in those days of my Spirit; and they shall prophesy: And I will shew wonders in heaven above, and signs in the earth beneath; blood, and fire, and vapour of smoke:The sun shall be turned into darkness, and the moon into blood, before that great and notable day of the Lord come: And it shall come to pass, that
whosoever shall call on the name of the Lord shall be saved. This is the same 'Day of the Lord' that the Apostle Peter also speaks of in his second Epistle, calling it the 'Day of God. When this 'Day of God' happens he says the Old heaven, and earth will be dissolved by fire, and the elements (principles of the old law) will be melted.

2 Pet. 3:12-13 Looking for and hasting unto the coming of the day of God, wherein the heavens being on fire shall be dissolved, and the elements shall melt with fervent heat? Nevertheless we, according to his promise, look for new heavens and a new earth, wherein dwelleth righteousness. This promise of a New Heaven and a New Earth that the Apostle Peter speaks of is first given in the book of Isaiah.

Isa. 66:22 For as the new heavens and the new earth, which I will make, shall remain before me, saith the LORD, so shall your seed and your name remain.Peter tells us that the New Heaven, and Earth that he is looking for will come after the Old has dissolved. This dissolving of the Old happens at 'the Day of God' which is the 'Great White Throne' judgment in the book of Revelation, where we read that the heaven and earth flee from the face of God and are found no more.

Rev. 20:11-15 And I saw a great white throne, and him that sat on it, from whose face the earth and the heaven fled away; and there was found no place for them. And I saw the dead, small and great, stand before God; and the books were opened: and another book was opened, which is the book of life: and the dead were judged out of those things which were written in the books, according to their works. And the sea gave up the dead which were in it; and death and hell delivered up the dead which were in them: and they were judged every man according to their works. And death and hell were cast into the lake of fire. This is the second death. And whosoever was not found written in the book of life was cast into the lake of fire.Immediately following the passing away of the Old, John sees a New Heaven and New Earth which he says 'New Jerusalem' is a part of.

Rev. 21:1-2 And I saw a new heaven and a new earth: for the first heaven and the first earth were passed away; and there was no more sea. And I John saw the holy city, new Jerusalem, coming down from God out of heaven, prepared as a bride adorned for her husband.Looking at these verses we get a good idea of what the 'Great White Throne' judgment is all about. It is when the Old Law receives its final judgment. Peter calls this the 'Day of God' and says the Old will be dissolved by fire, and melted by fervent heat. What John sees in his vision is those things that are judged at the 'Great White Throne' being cast into the 'Lake of Fire'.

The common theme of the Old being judged and destroyed by fire is being presented in both Peters’ Epistle, and Johns’ vision, pointing strongly to the conclusion that they both are speaking of the same thing.

God Bless
