I thought it might be useful if we discussed common errors in pattern detection. My pet hate is people seeing patterns in pi or other irrational numbers.

Pi is generated by fixed formulae, such as this Taylor series

Pi = 4/1-4/3+4/5-4/7+4/9 . . . . .

Therefore pi cannot be encoded. Words and phrases can be and have been encoded with approximations of pi and other irrationals, such as

2368/754 = pi,

and

2701/430 = tau (2pi)

430 being the ov of G1.1 (NIV)

A good approximation pi is of course encoded in G1.1 (BHS). But pi itself can never contain codes. Neither can e, phi, gamma, tau, or any other irrational. I would also say the same about physical constants like alpha, c and G, although there is conceivably room for manoeuvre there, since physical constants are not generated by formulae.

If anyone doubts this, consider the six 9s in a row, beginning on the 762nd decimal digit of pi, and against great odds. It’s called a Feynman point and it means precisely nothing.

Tau (2pi) has seven 9s in a row beginning on the 761st decimal digit, even more amazing but again without meaning.
