Now to him that is of power to stablish you according to my gospel,
and the preaching of Jesus Christ, according to the revelation of the mystery, which was kept secret
since the world began, But now is made manifest, and by the scriptures of the prophets, according
to the commandment of the everlasting God, made known to all nations for the
obedience of faith: To God only wise, be glory through Jesus Christ for ever. Amen.
Romans 16:25ff
Perhaps one of the most difficult things for the skeptic to believe is that the hidden hand of God
has guided the development of all aspects of the Holy Bible, down to its smallest details. It must be
remembered that there are numerous Biblical arguments to support belief in God's
intimate (and special) involvement with everything having to do with his Word.
The fact that at least one chapter index was established by God is the necessary implication
of Acts 13.33, which refers to Psalm Chapter 2 by number. If any person were to move
Psalm 2, the Second Psalm would no longer be the Second Psalm and Scripture would
be broken. The significance of this precedent is greatly amplified by noting that the subject matter
of the Second Psalm is itself reflective of the ultimate meaning of the Number 2 as found in
the Second Person of the Trinity, of
whom it speaks with incomparable prophetic clarity.
Skeptics may still argue that the precedent set in Acts 13.33 is a special case that gives
no warrant to believe that "every jot and tittle" of the Bible,
including the versification added
hundreds of years after the Canon was closed, was in any way inspired or designed by God.
Most Christian skeptics I have talked with imediately suggest that the chapter structure is
arbitrary and therefore meaningless. Of course, such an attitude is at odds with the God of the
Bible, who routinely uses apparently arbitrary human actions to accomplish his will. As it is written
in Proverbs 16.33:
The lot is cast into the lap; but the whole disposing thereof is of the LORD.
Beyond all arguments there remains the great body of evidence presented on this
site. Endless debate convinces no one, feeds no soul, and often produces people who are
"Ever learning, and never able to come to the knowledge of the truth." This is not the purpose of
God's word, nor this site, both of which are given that:
ye might believe that Jesus is the Christ, the Son of God; and that
believing ye might have life through his name.
John 20.31
